Programme REVITALIZE - Nord Kenya

Les territoires arides du nord du Kenya sont caractérisés par des sécheresses intenses et récurrentes, l’insécurité, la marginalisation, le manque de services publics, d’infrastructures, et les carences de développement économique.

Le programme « REVITALIZE » appuie la réalisation d’activités productives des micro-entrepreneurs vulnérables tout en contribuant à améliorer la paix sociale et la protection de l’enfance défavorisée.

La région de Marsabit au nord du Kenya, où 90% de la population vit sous le seuil de pauvreté absolue, est l’une des zones les plus vulnérables du pays.
Le secteur informel y est prédominant.

La majorité de la population adopte des mécanismes de survie face aux divers aléas. La sécheresse et la famine y sont récurrents. La rareté des ressources en eau et en pâturages exacerbe des conflits interethniques particulièrement meurtriers.
Les périodes de sécheresse alternent avec de violentes saisons humides. Les chocs climatiques provoquent des inondations et la destruction d’infrastructures régionales, impactant les projets de développement et appelant au déclenchement de l’aide d’urgence.

La population du Comte de Marsabit souffre d’un enclavement aggravé par un manque de formations disponibles. Seuls 32% des personnes ayant un niveau d’éducation secondaire ou supérieur travaillent contre rémunération. La population en activité issue de la classe moyenne locale n’a pas accès à l’apprentissage des compétences qui lui permettrait de développer ses activités, d’augmenter ses profits ou de recruter davantage d’employés.

Le fort potentiel de petites entreprises locales (artisans, commerçants, promoteurs de projets de créations d’entreprises ou d’activités génératrices de revenus) se heurte à un manque d’accès à des formations et à des ressources d’informations.

I&S a implanté un Centre de Ressources pour permettre à la population de Marsabit un accès à l’information et à des formations spécifiques afin de promouvoir un développement territorial équilibré, et d’améliorer les systèmes éducatifs, sanitaires, économiques et écologiques.
Les interventions de I&S sont également réalisées en itinérance dans les zones les plus inhospitalières du Nord du Kenya et contribuent à renforcer la mise en réseau entre les acteurs de la société civile (dont les ONG), les ressources communautaires et les services publics.
