Le Comté de Kajiado est essentiellement rural et majoritairement peuplé de communautés Maasaï dont le bétail constitue souvent le seul bien.
Située en plein coeur de la brousse, la région d’Elerai possède une zone de conservation d’une superficie de 2030 hectares. Cette conservation est voisine de N’Gaissi Conservation Initiative et garantit la sécurité de l’habitat animalier et des transitions de la faune vers le Parc National d’Amboseli et la forêt du Kilimanjaro en Tanzanie.

Les pâturages ne sont disponibles que de façon saisonnière, lors des saisons des pluies. La disponibilité d’aliments pour les saisons sèches est un problème majeur du système de production animale et de l’alimentation des espèces herbivores fauniques.

Objectif : Contribuer à réduire l’impact des sécheresses sur le bétail et la faune en améliorant les moyens de subsistance des communautés pastorales tout en garantissant une meilleure gestion des prairies naturelles de la région semi aride de Satao Eleraï.

Activités réalisées : Formations aux techniques agricoles et à la gestion de projet, achat d’équipements, construction d’un fenil, fabrication des bottes de foin, mise en œuvre de la filière de vente.

Pérennisation : La filière de fourrage a garanti l’augmentation des revenus des éleveurs par la production de fourrage et la meilleure santé des cheptels. Elle a également enrayé les feux de brousse. La gestion des prairies a permis d’augmenter la fréquentation de la faune dans la zone de conservation et d’impacter positivement la lutte contre les conflits humains-prédateurs grâce à la réduction de la déprédation.

Lors de la sècheresse qui a frappé en 2021 la région d’Amboseli, la population est parvenue à maintenir ses cheptels en vie grâce à la pérennisation de la filière de fourrage financée en 2015 par la Direction de la Coopération Internationale de Monaco.
